Three day-use hot springs in Hakone where the bath itself has said guests with tattoos may bathe — one with no restriction, one if covered, one if you come alone.

Last updated:

Hakone is a hot spring area within easy reach of Tokyo, and “tattoo friendly onsen Hakone” is one of the questions people type into Google. The answer changes from bath to bath, and two of the baths below changed their rules only in 2025.

Every bath on this page has said so on its own website. Each entry links to a detail page with the source, the hours and the full price list.

No restriction

Hakone Yuryo

Hakone Yuryo lifted its tattoo restriction on 1 April 2025. It is a day-use hot spring 3 minutes by free shuttle bus from Hakone-Yumoto Station, with open-air baths and private open-air rooms.

  • Hours: weekdays 10:00–20:00 (last entry 19:00); weekends and holidays 10:00–21:00 (last entry 20:00)
  • Main baths, junior high and up: ¥1,700–1,800 on weekdays, ¥2,000–2,200 at weekends and holidays

Allowed if covered

Mori no Yu at Hakone Kowakien Yunessun

Yunessun has a swimsuit area, but Mori no Yu is its separate large bath with open-air and indoor baths and a sauna. Since 1 October 2025, guests with tattoos may use Mori no Yu if the tattoo can be fully covered with two of the bath’s own paid cover stickers. The size and price of the stickers are not published.

  • Hours: 11:00–20:00 (last entry 19:30)
  • Mori no Yu only, junior high and up: ¥1,500, ¥1,700 or ¥1,800 depending on the date

Allowed if you come alone

Tenzan Tohji-kyo

Tenzan Tohji-kyo is a bathhouse in a quiet valley above Hakone-Yumoto, run as a place for therapeutic bathing rather than leisure. Its rule is unusual and strict:

One guest with tattoos at a time

Tenzan does not refuse guests because of tattoos, but only one person with tattoos may be inside at once. If two or more are inside — even if they arrived separately and do not know each other — they are asked to leave. Tours and travel agents are not admitted at all.

If you are travelling with a tattooed friend, this is not the place to go together.

  • Hours: 9:00–23:00 (last entry 22:00), open daily except about five days in mid-December
  • ¥1,450 for adults, including bath tax. Cash only — there is no ATM nearby.
  • About 10 minutes by Hakone Tozan Bus from Hakone-Yumoto Station (stop 4, Kyu-Kaido line K) to Okuyumoto-iriguchi, then about 5 minutes on foot

Looking for a ryokan or a private bath?

Many people searching for Hakone are really looking for somewhere to stay. We do not list ryokan yet. The most reliable route for guests with tattoos is usually a private bath (貸切風呂) or a room with its own bath, since no other guests share it. Ask the ryokan directly before you book, and look for the words 入れ墨 or タトゥー in its rules.
