Every bath in Beppu that the city itself says welcomes guests with tattoos — public baths and private baths, with prices and hours as the city lists them.

Beppu is the one city we cover where the city government itself answers the tattoo question — and the answer is mostly yes.
Two things from Beppu City are behind every bath on this page:
- The city’s council record. In December 2016, Beppu City told its council that its municipal baths do not ban guests with tattoos; only intimidating behaviour is treated as a nuisance.
- The city’s own tattoo-friendly onsen map. Enjoy Onsen, an English onsen site run by Beppu City, publishes a map of over 100 facilities that welcome guests with tattoos, split into public baths and private baths.
The list below is every Beppu bath on that map, plus the municipal baths. For many of the small neighbourhood baths the city lists only a fee and a closing day; where it does not list hours, neither do we.
How to read the list
- Public baths — you bathe with other guests. Tattoos are allowed.
- Private baths (kashikiri-yu / kazoku-buro) — you rent a bath room, usually by the hour. Tattoos are not an issue because no one else is there. Prices are per room, not per person.
- Many small baths are neighbourhood baths used daily by local residents. Wash before you get in, keep your towel out of the water, and keep your voice down.
- Where a bath says overnight guests have priority, day visitors may not be able to get in at busy times.
Before you go
- Hours and closing days change. For municipal baths, check the city’s page (linked from each detail page). For the others, ask at the front desk or check the facility’s own page on the day.
- Bring coins. Many neighbourhood baths cost ¥100–300 and some are unstaffed.
