Hot springs in Kyushu you can visit with tattoos, from each bath's own rules: Beppu, Kurokawa, Unzen, Ureshino, Nagasaki and Yamaga, plus the ones that refuse.

Last updated:

Kyushu is the easiest part of Japan to visit with tattoos, mostly because of Beppu. Outside Beppu the answer changes from bath to bath, so everything below comes from each bath’s own official rules. Each name links to a detail page with the source, prices and hours.

Key points

  1. Beppu (Oita) has the most baths where tattoos are allowed.
  2. Ryokan Ichinoi in Kurokawa says it has no restrictions on tattoos.
  3. In Nagasaki and Saga, several baths admit you if the tattoo is covered.
  4. We have not found a bath in Fukuoka that says yes; the one we list refuses tattoos.

Tattoos allowed

  • Beppu (Oita) — the city’s own foreign-language hot spring site lists public baths that welcome guests with tattoos. See Tattoo-friendly onsen in Beppu.
  • Ryokan Ichinoi (Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto) — its official FAQ says: “Our hotel does not have any restrictions on tattoos.” Day visitors can use the open-air bath only. ¥600.

Allowed if you cover the tattoo

Allowed with conditions

  • Yume Rindo (Kurokawa Onsen, Kumamoto) — refuses tattoos, but allows small one-point fashion tattoos if you declare them in advance. No size is given. ¥660.
  • Tarutama Onsen Takibiyori (Minamiaso, Kumamoto) — not the large bath, but the private bath is available: ¥2,500 per room for two adults, first come, first served.
